Portsmouth Shipping and Logistics Networks Could See Gains as AI Cuts Delivery Routes

Portsmouth’s freight and maritime-linked logistics sector could benefit from AI-powered route optimisation tools designed to improve delivery efficiency and reduce operational costs.

One example is Finmile, a London-based AI logistics optimisation platform that is being used by delivery operators to dynamically plan and adjust routes in real time.

In one reported case study, a logistics operator using Finmile’s AI-powered routing software reduced its daily routes from around 30–40 to 16–20 while maintaining delivery capacity.

The technology works by analysing multiple real-world variables such as traffic conditions, delivery time windows, driver availability, and vehicle capacity. It then continuously recalculates routes throughout the day to improve efficiency and reduce wasted mileage.

Industry experts say this reflects a wider shift across the logistics sector, where AI is no longer just a support tool but is increasingly becoming central to how delivery networks operate.

Asad Mirza, Logistics Expert at Cargo Force, said:

“AI route optimisation is fundamentally changing how logistics networks operate, shifting planning from static scheduling to real-time decision-making based on live conditions.”

“What we’re seeing is a shift towards smarter, more responsive logistics networks that can reduce costs, improve delivery accuracy, and help meet growing consumer expectations for speed and reliability.”

Why This Matters

Last-mile delivery remains one of the most expensive and complex parts of logistics. AI-powered systems like Finmile are helping operators respond to real-world variables from traffic congestion to delivery time constraints in ways that traditional planning systems cannot.

By reducing unnecessary mileage and improving route efficiency, these systems may also help lower fuel consumption and associated CO₂ emissions, supporting wider sustainability goals across the logistics sector.

As demand for faster shipping continues to grow, experts say AI optimisation is likely to become a core component of modern delivery infrastructure rather than a competitive advantage.

Mirza added: “Platforms like Finmile demonstrate how AI can help logistics operators reduce inefficiencies that have existed in the sector for decades, particularly in last-mile delivery, which remains the most complex and costly part of the supply chain.”
