Volunteering opens new doors for people in Havant
A group of Havant locals are celebrating a fresh start after completing a 26-week programme that has helped them build confidence, improve their wellbeing and take positive steps towards the future.

Positive Pathways, run by Community First, supports Havant Borough residents aged 18 and over who may be facing a range of challenges, including poor physical or mental health, substance misuse, learning difficulties, long-term unemployment, or experience of crime, either as a victim or offender.
The programme combines volunteering, mentoring, training, workshops and social activities, giving participants the opportunity to develop life skills, build confidence and work towards personal goals in a supportive environment.

Each week, participants take part in life skills and wellbeing sessions alongside two or three community activities. These include healthy cookery, gardening, painting and decorating, conservation projects and friendly drop-in sessions at Leigh Park Community Centre.
Many of the activities are delivered in partnership with local schools, care homes, businesses and community organisations, giving participants the opportunity to contribute to their local community and see the difference their work can make.
The latest group of graduates recently celebrated completing the programme, with support from Havant Mayor Councillor Paul Tansom and Mayoress Dawn Tansom.
Tim Houghton, Chief Executive Office of Community First, said: “Volunteering can be a powerful first step for people who may have been out of work or disconnected from their community for some time. Positive Pathways gives participants the chance to try new things, gain practical experience and see the value they can bring to others. The achievements of this latest group are a real testament to what can happen when people are given the right support and opportunity.”

The programme has also made a positive impact on the organisations and community spaces where participants volunteer.
Anita Fairbrother from Citizens Advice Solent East Havant branch said: “This is a fantastic programme and such a benefit to our local area. Sharon and the rest of the team really do make a difference for the individuals.”
Lisa Wilkes, Events Coordinator at Bedhampton Community Centre, where Positive Pathways has spent time volunteering said: “Their contribution has not only reduced pressure on our small team but has also brought energy, encouragement and a sense of community spirit to the centre.”
Positive Pathways is now entering its third year of five years’ funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
Participants can be referred by job centres, GPs, social prescribers, and health workers, or can self-refer directly. After completing the 26-week programme, ongoing support and drop-in sessions remain available to help individuals stay connected and continue building on their success.
