No wrongdoing after claims about Fareham Ukip election leaflets

Conservatives in Fareham claimed Ukip had broken the law by sending out leaflets with unclear information.

Election candidates have to make it clear who is responsible for the production of the leaflets. But Ukip leaflets for Stubbington show the information in small black letters on a purple background, making it difficult to read.

Councillor Chris Wood, Fareham’s only Ukip councillor, said Hampshire police had contacted him.

He said: ‘The police have contacted us and said they are not taking it any further and it has not broken the Representation of the People Act 1983 Section 110.

‘The police have decided it’s clear and visible. I believe it was a complete and utter waste of police time.’

Tory leader of Fareham Borough Council, Sean Woodward, said: ‘Ukip has contravened the Electoral Commission’s rules which state that imprints must be clear and legible so that there is transparency about which named person is responsible for producing and printing them. This is hopefully a lesson learned for them.’
