Two fire appliances were deployed from Cosham Fire Station at 12.30pm this afternoon (February 15) after reports of smoke coming from a 40ft yacht moored in the marina. Two fire fighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to enter the vessel’s cabin and extinguish the fire.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault with the yacht’s radio system. While the vessel was left with ‘minimal fire damage’ there was ‘some smoke damage to the cabin’.

Fortunately no one was on board at the time although the owner’s partner did arrive at the pontoon shortly after the blaze had been put out.

Passers-by were alerted to the incident after hearing the yacht’s smoke alarm.

One of the fire fighters who attended the incident said: ‘While there was no one on board the yacht, this shows the importance of having a working smoke alarm on all vessels. This is particularly important as boats will contain fire hazards such as gas bottles and flares.’

Hillhead and Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Teams also attended the fire to ‘maintain water safety and prevent any environmental damage’.

Fire crews were stood down at 2.30pm.
