Explosion at Portsmouth home as police and fire crews evacuate Whale Island Way residents - recap updates

RESIDENTS have been evacuated from their homes after an ‘explosion’ and fire at Whale Island in Portsmouth.

The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service control room said that a call had come in at 12.14pm about the explosion and fire on Whale Island Way.

They said that crews from Southsea, Cosham, Fareham and Portchester had been called, as well as one from Eastleigh and an aerial ladder platform from Basingstoke. An environmental protection unit was also sent.

Photos from the scene show serious damage to the back of a home caused by the explosion, with emergency services attending. The fire has now been put out.

Residents have been evacuated from the neighbouring homes and taken to nearby HMS Excellent.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said three people were assessed by paramedics but there are not thought to be any serious injuries.
