A Hampshire high street bank has reopened after a fire and power outage caused the branch to close.

The Barclays Bank in West Street, Fareham, experienced a fire in an electrical cupboard on Wednesday, October 2. Following the fire, the branch experienced a power outage which led to the branch remaining closed on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Barclays, said: “We can confirm the fire brigade attended on Wednesday evening outside of opening hours, following the detection of smoke at the branch which was safely contained. In addition, we have experienced an unrelated power outage, which meant the branch needed to close for security purposes.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers during this time. However, I’m pleased to confirm the branch is now fully re-open and we look forward to serving our customers as normal.”

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service crews from Fareham and Cosham attended the scene on Wednesday where they discovered the fire in an electrical cupboard.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Fareham and Cosham crews were called to a bank on West Street shortly after 9pm on Wednesday evening. Upon arrival firefighters in breathing apparatus found light smoke logging in the building.

“One hose reel jet along with a dry powder fire extinguisher was used to stop a fire within a ground-floor electricity cupboard. Ventilation fans were used to clear smoke before the incident was handed over to electricity contactors and an onsite member of staff.

“HIWFRS left the scene and returned to station at around half 10.”

The bank is scheduled to be open between 9.30am and 1pm tomorrow as usual.
