A HUGE £10m redevelopment of a much-loved holiday park on Hayling Island has begun.

Away Resorts, which owns Mill Rythe Holiday Village, in Havant Road, has invested £10m into turning the popular park into a contemporary, self-catered destination.

Mill Rythe Holiday Village has been hosting holidaymakers since the 1940s. It is one of six sites owned by Away Resorts.

The park shut on March 22 due to the coronavirus pandemic and did not reopen this year while plans were made for its redevelopment.

However, Away Resorts, which also owns Sandy Balls in the New Forest and Whitecliff Bay in Bembridge, said that unprecedented demand for UK breaks has meant the project has moved forward.

Chief executive, Carl Castledine – whose grandfather founded Britain’s first ever holiday park – said: ‘Away Resorts are redesigning the caravan and glamping experience for today’s modern guest.

‘We’ve always been very proud of Mill Rythe, and all of our parks, and we’re even prouder to be investing more into this booming industry.

‘Staycations are going to be just as vital next year as they have been this year and we have worked hard to design something different that reflects the way today’s visitors live and relax.

‘We hope that our customers are as excited about this amazing new development as we are.’

It has renamed the park Mill Rythe Coastal Retreat and the first stage will see existing chalets upgraded and replaced with up to 85 premium quality, modern caravans and luxury lodges – available for customers to book from January 1.

Fifty bases for holiday home ownership will also be available to purchase from December 1 – with prices starting from £79,995.

New facilities such as a lounge bar, restaurant with outdoor seating, and an indoor and outdoor swimming pool complete with a spa and a flume, will be put in/

Keyless accommodation check-in, spacious pitches and self-catered, or dine-in, options offer customers the flexibility and reassurance they now require.

The first phase of the redevelopment is expected to complete next spring and will open to owners on March 1 and April 2 for holidaymakers.

Mill Rythe will also be introducing a a new entertainment programme delivered by its in-house team.

The transformation is expected to be complete within 18 months.
