Find out why Portsmouth Grammar School's Sixth Form experience is transformational

At Portsmouth Grammar School, we celebrate curiosity and creativity both inside and outside the classroom; we nurture a cosmopolitan outlook; and we are committed to being positive and powerful advocates for what we believe in.

This is a spirited and adaptable community and personal human connections are at the heart of all that we do.

Above all, we look to the future, and we prepare our young people to make a courageous contribution in our complex and changing world.

Our contemporary and dynamic Sixth Form curriculum, launched in September 2020, has been a huge success and has ensured that young people graduate from PGS with so much more than excellent A Level grades.

Our unique 16+ curriculum is comprised of five important segments:

• Principal Academic Subjects

Students can choose either three or four A Level subjects, to study in depth. All subjects are taught by highly-skilled subject specialists and on average 80% of grades awarded are A*-B.

• Academic Enrichment Curriculum

This is about offering students academic breadth beyond their core subjects, as well as enabling students to drill down deeper into the topics they really love.

The thinking skills learned will enrich students’ work in all subjects, and the research skills students develop will set them up for study beyond school.

• Personal Enrichment Curriculum

It involves developing the skills of leadership, supporting an understanding of oneself and the world around, and bringing young people into purposeful contact with our wider communities.

This is a pioneering part of our curriculum offer, and we believe it is a very special part of what PGS can offer the future student.

• Beyond The Classroom

Our co-curriculum – the clubs, activities, societies, and trips that take place in lunchtimes, after school, at the weekend and in the holidays – are a hugely important part of developing skills, of bringing balance and variety to the week, and above all, allowing students to pursue the activities they love. There is an astonishing array of activities to choose from.

• Support Every Step of the Way

We set great store by caring for our pupils and offering the support they need at every step of the way.

We want our students to be independent and resourceful; at the same time, we realise that navigating a way through higher education pathways requires considerable investment of time and expertise.

We are always here to help and our dedicated Careers, Universities and Scholarship Department ensure that 90% of our students attend their chosen university.

We firmly believe it is the broader aspects of a Sixth Former’s development which will enable them to thrive when they get to the destination they aspire to reach, help them create opportunities for themselves, and have the skills and confidence to take control of their futures.

PGS is a truly inclusive community, and we are proud to be supporting 1 in 6 pupils with means-tested financial assistance.

Our commitment is to increase this ratio to 1 in 4 by 2025 as we strive to offer even more transformational educational opportunities to talented young people in our area.
