Government u-turns on A-level results after low grades across the country

Due to the virus outbreak in March, all A-level exams were cancelled, with many students expecting to instead simply receive their predicted grades.

Instead, at least 39 per cent of A-levels were downgraded, some by as many as five grades across students’ courses.

Now, the government has announced that teacher-assessed grades will be used instead for both A-levels and the upcoming GCSE results.

Ofqual chairman Roger Taylor said: ‘We understand this has been a distressing time for students, who were awarded exam results last week for exams they never took. The pandemic has created circumstances no one could have ever imagined or wished for.

‘After reflection, we have decided that the best way to do this is to award grades on the basis of what teachers submitted.’
