MP thanks headteachers for funding march

Headteachers from across Hampshire, including Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Waterlooville descended on parliament to demand improved funding for the region's schools. 

In a letter to The News, Mr Morgan said: '˜For the first time headteachers from Portsmouth and across the country marched on Downing Street to tell the prime minister that school cuts have gone too far. I would like to thank them '“ they have my full support.'

Mr Morgan is concerned about the implications of the new funding formula which could see many local schools worse off. '˜In Portsmouth, our schools and colleges face £3.7 million in budget cuts. The eight primary schools in the heart of the city will lose £270,000 between them,' explained Mr Morgan.

The MP has raised the issue in Westminster at Prime Minister's Questions. '˜The government needs to open its eyes to what is going on in the classroom. It is unsustainable and unacceptable. I will be launching a campaign to seek public support because I believe that where you are born shouldn't determine where you end up in life,' added Mr Morgan.

In response to the march a Department for Education spokesperson said: '˜There is more money going into schools than ever before '“ a record £43.5 billion by 2020.'
