Annie Scanlon, 25, who teaches PE and science at Bayhouse School, has received the Basketball England South Region National Volunteer Award in recognition of her work with Solent Kestrels under 14s girls’ team.

Annie, who is also a member of the Wales international basketball team, said: ‘It’s still a big mystery who nominated me but I would like to say to whoever did how grateful I am. It’s a nice feeling that the hard work you put in is recognised.’

Annie is helping to promote basketball in schools across the Solent and last year ran a girl’s festival to increase participation.

‘I feel very passionate about encouraging students but particularly girls to take up a sport,’ she said.

The dedicated teacher was due to collect her award at a ceremony last week but the event was cancelled due to coronavirus.
