1,099 Covid patients in Hampshire hospitals in Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Southampton, Winchester, Andover, Basingstoke

Weekly updates are provided showing how many patients with coronavirus are occupying beds at hospital trusts.

The latest data goes up to January 26, and includes 425 in Queen Alexandra Hospital on that day. The number of Covid patients in QA peaked on January 11 at 539.

QA Hospital had just 26 patients on mechanical ventilation on January 1, but this has increased to 49 by January 19. There were 47 a week later on January 26.

The total for the Hampshire NHS trusts below combined was 1,099 on January 26. It’s a reduction of 75 since the last update.

There were 121 patients in beds capable of providing mechanical ventilation.

Such equipment essentially breathes for the patients, and is the most significant intervention for seriously-unwell patients with the infection.

Figures have now hit around double the first wave last spring at QA Hospital in Cosham.

On August 1 there were just two people with the infection in beds at the hospital. This winter has seen a huge spike in community infections.

Prime minister Boris Johnson announced a national lockdown on January 4 in a bid to slow the spread.

Figures below show the number of Covid-19 patients in beds.

Numbers in brackets are the number of those who are on mechanical ventilation beds.
