Residents in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport and Havant and Waterlooville took to the streets and clapped, banged pots and pans and made noise in honour of The Clap For Our Carers campaign, which was launched to show the nation’s appreciation for the doctors, nurses, consultants, carers, cleaners and porters for their role in the ongoing fight against the virus.

Laura Lumsden from Waterlooville joined her neighbours in Milton Road.

‘It lifted my spirits and made me smile. It makes me proud to be British.’

Kat Davies is a cleaner in the emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital and was left overwhelmed by the response she saw in her street and on social media.

She said: ‘To see the community on my doorstep acknowledge the hard work and efforts of the NHS was just overwhelming. It really had me a bit emotional with a tear in my eye.

‘Some times as a domestic NHS worker we can be forgotten about or lost in in the craziness of a hospital environment. Since the outbreak of Covid-19 the cleaners as well as all staff have been swamped with a huge work load.

‘At a time like this everyone has really pulled together as one team supporting each other and looking out for everyone’s well being.

‘It makes everything feel so worth it and knowing people are appreciating it. I'm proud to serve my community and play my part in getting through Covid-19.’

In White Lion in Gosport, Clare Hunter and her fellow residents enjoyed an hour of music as part of their #clapforourcarers celebrations.

Clare said: ‘We had the best hour of feel good music. I am so proud of our community every person was on their balconies and when it came to the clap for carers, we blasted out Simply The Best and had a good sing along. It was the best feeling in the world.’

Steffen Tauchnitz is a nurse in Acute Trauma and Orthopaedics at QA.

He added: ‘We heard the clapping and we joined in. We felt humbled and appreciated by the public in these difficult times.’
