Coronavirus: How does Portsmouth's Covid rate compare to places in Tier Three?

The government is currently reviewing the coronavirus tiers for areas across the country.

Portsmouth and the rest of Hampshire have been in tier two since the second lockdown ended on December 2.

The review will take place today and the results are expected to be announced on December 17.

London and parts of Hertfordshire and Essex were moved into tier three earlier in the week.

Here is how our city’s rate compares to those areas.

What is the current rate in Portsmouth?

In the latest update, it was revealed that Portsmouth had a coronavirus infection rate of 202.4 cases per 100,000 people – in the seven days to December 11.

This was up from a rate of 141.9 the week previously.

There were 435 cases confirmed in Portsmouth in the seven days to December 11.

What are the rates in new tier three areas?

Basildon in Essex has the highest rate among the new tier three areas, with a rate of 696.1, which is significantly higher than the current rate in Portsmouth.

The rate in Havering is 591 cases per 100,000.

However, Portsmouth does have a higher rate than some of the new tier three areas.

This includes:

- Westminster – 155

- Camden – 162.2

- Kensington and Chelsea, 157.6

- Richmond upon Thames, 185.3

- Hammersmith and Fulham, 191.2
