Should the UK's lockdown be extended? Here's what our readers think

THE UK has been in lockdown for more than three weeks.

It is expected that the measures will be extended in the coming days.

But while the decision has yet to be announced, The News decided to ask our readers whether they believed the lockdown should be extended or not here’s what they said:

Lisa Ralph wrote: ‘Yes most definitely. The Spanish flu in 1918m, Dr Niven closed schools and theatres by the end of june it was thought the virus had gone or under control.

‘Everyone went back to a normal way of living.......... the virus mutated over to humans even stronger....... by September the virus was back.

‘It had become stronger and even more deadly. It was September that the virus took hold and killed 50 million .

‘We should stay in as long as it takes otherwise this would all be for nothing.’

Violet McLoughlin said: ‘We should continue with the measures, but they need to look at improving home grocery/deliveries. I'm petrified to go out but I have no choice.’

Irene Wood wrote: ‘We are nowhere near the end of this terrible time yet. All the time people are still dying we have to be vigilant.

‘Nobody likes it & we all want to hug our families but better to wait another 6 months & know we can safely than go too early & cause it to get worse.’

Jessica Money wrote: ‘Yes, especially when they still don't know enough about it, and young, healthy people, including children are dying..we have no way of knowing who it will affect worse!!

‘So now it's not just about protecting the high risk, it's about protecting ourselves, our families and everyone around else.’

Brenda Glasspool said: ‘Yes stay locked down otherwise it will get worse. We definitely haven't reached the peak yet. As a nation we don't have this under control yet.’

Alesha Slonecki said: Absolutely! The death rate is way too high and if we return to normal life it will only get worse!

‘I would love for it to be normal, I really would however the safety of others is what matters most!

‘If we don’t get the summer we want then at least we will have a lovely Christmas surrounded by our family we didn’t get to see!’

Some want stricter measures

Edward Couldwell said: ‘Yes it should be a full lock down with the army handing out food parcels to stop contact spread.

‘No one out of house for any reason.

‘20 days isolation is not enough as you can spread it 14 days before symptoms and up to 30 days after symptoms have gone.’

Others argued that lockdown should be lifted

Stephen Varns said: ‘No unemployment is up already and we are not making any money. If we carry on it will be really bad.’

Samantha Dawson said: ‘End it today, the long term effects will be way worse than the virus.’
