Participants were given a choice as to where their donations went so they could pick and area of the hospital close to their hearts.

Claire Appi took part for QA’s renal department.

After the walk, she said: ‘After living a fit, healthy and active life, my mum was suddenly struck down with kidney failure and was on the verge of heart failure
when she was admitted to hospital.

‘She spent the next four weeks in QA, where it was discovered she is suffering from a rare auto-immune condition which caused extensive damage to her kidneys.

‘She spent her time in hospital receiving dialysis, plasma exchanges and transfusions. Now back home she is on a vast amount of medication and will be receiving dialysis three times a week for the remainder of her life.
