NHS pleads for 'patience' as it looks to double flu jab numbers in the south east as part of its biggest campaign this winter

THE NHS is aiming to vaccinate more than 4.5 million across the south east this winter –with doctors pleading for ‘patience’ as some patients may face delays.

Last year, the NHS vaccinated 2.6 million across the south east of England.

Now, with the healthcare service looking to almost double the number of jabs, doctors have warned demand is higher than usual – meaning some people could face delays.

The campaign will include children aged two and up to school year 7 and people over the aged of 65, as well anyone with long term health conditions, pregnant women, carers, and household contacts of those on the NHS Shielded list.

Dr Matt Nisbet, a Hampshire GP, said: ‘It's brilliant that healthy people between the age of 50 and 64 are able to be vaccinated this year. ‘But I'm sure if you fall into that category that you'll understand that we want to vaccinate the most vulnerable people first.

‘So if you're a healthy 50-year-old, thank you for bearing with us while we vaccinate people who might be more vulnerable to flu.

‘It's great news that more people than ever are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine through their GP or pharmacy.’

If you have a high temperature, new, continuous cough or a loss of taste and smell, then you are advised not to visit your GP practice or pharmacy.

Anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 should contact their flu clinic to rearrange an appointment.
