Yellow heat health alert issued for Portsmouth and surrounding area as heatwave continues

It comes as the heatwave is expected to continue through this week.

Authorities are urging people to be more careful in the sun as a heat health warning is issued.

This afternoon (Monday, July 13), a yellow heat health warning has been issued for Portsmouth and the surrounding area, which will be in place from 9am on Tuesday, July 14 until 9pm on Friday, July 17.

It comes as the third heatwave of the year continues into another week, with temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s forecast for much of the south coast.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), health and social care services will be under “significant” increased pressure this week, with the likelihood for a rise in deaths among those age 65 and over with health conditions, as well as for younger age groups.

Other possible impacts include an increase in demand for health services, internal temperatures in care homes and hospitals exceeding the recommended threshold, and the heat affecting the NHS workforce.

Heat health alerts are issued to providers of NHS commissioned care, local authorities and social care organisations, rather than being warnings for the general public.
