The Kingston Tavern in Kingston Road, Portsmouth, was also known as 'the hanging pub'. It's an old story from the days of wooden ships and concerned a sailor, who after a long time at sea was returning to his family with the much-needed money he had saved. But, after leaving his ship he visited a pub in Portsmouth, got drunk and was robbed. When he had sobered up he was too ashamed to go home so he booked in to the Kingston Tavern for the night - where he was found the next morning hanging from a large hook in the ceiling.Submitted pictures scanned Photo: The News archive
