A glimpse of life in old Gosport before the wrecking ball | Nostalgia

Local artist Neil Marshall has produced another of his marvellous paintings, this time of a scene at Gosport.His pictures are so real you could almost walk into them. Look at the reflection in the puddle of the man carrying a kitbag.

The last buildings in this street were demolished in the early 1960s.

This scene shows a boy in a sailor suit asking an old man walking his dog where he can sail his model yacht. The man directs him to the moat on the other side of the vicarage. The original Camper & Nicholson yard is in the background.

The location today is in front of the tower block nearest the vicarage on the Gosport shoreline right behind Holy Trinity Church.

• In the second picture we see a view from Hilsea Lagoon looking across to Portcreek when it was picturesque and before today’s road system and the motorway destroyed the scene forever.

The bridge where boats could pass under on a voyage around Portsea Island can be seen with a tramcar passing over it.
