New World rosé wine | Alistair Gibson

Following on from last week’s wine column, I thought I really should have a look at rosés from the New World.

It would appear as if rosé from Provence and other Mediterranean wine regions has a monopoly on the wine shelves, but there is no reason why other regions cannot produce good quality rosé.

Argentinian malbec is the most popular wine style right now. It is best known as a full-bodied red wine of deep colour and robust tannins, which makes a perfect partner for steak.

So how about rosé from Chile made from malbec?

True, there aren’t many of them but Vin Manent Malbec Rosé 2019, Colchagua (Hennings £11.99) is more than just a curiosity.

Almost as pale as a southern French rosé but with a lovely brightness, there are red fruits including red currant and cherry with a twist of citrus on the nose, before a very fresh palate with more red fruits, a little spice and crisp acidity.

It is dry but with just a hint of fruit sweetness on the finish, which I really like.

This would work really well with grilled tuna or even a very mild curry.

I hosted a wine dinner last year with Kym Milne MW, winemaker at Bird in Hand winery in the Adelaide Hills. It was one of those tastings where all the wines were met with universal approval.

Bird in Hand Pinot Noir Rosé 2019, Adelaide Hills (Waitrose £11.99 on offer from £13.99 until July 28) is another lovely wine in the range.

Made from pinot noir, the grapes spent a short time on their skins before being fermented in stainless steel tanks.

It is a delicate pale salmon colour, with notes of ripe strawberries, red cherries and rose petals, followed by a fresh palate with more strawberry fruit and a crisp, lively finish.

This works really well with some simply grilled fish such as mackerel or red mullet.

Miguel Torres Santa Digna Rosé 2019, Central Valley (Fareham Wine Cellar £9.25, tauruswines.co.uk £9.99, robertsandspeight.co.uk £8.99 – check vintages at both stockists) comes in a special edition bottle to celebrate 40 years since it was first produced by the Torres family in Chile.

It is made from cabernet sauvignon and is bright red cherry in colour. This is a more powerful style of rosé with red plum and pink grapefruit on the nose, followed by a juicy palate, well balanced with crisp acidity.

This would work beautifully with barbecued lamb or tomato based pasta dishes.
