The new owners of a pub in Fareham are convinced their boozer is haunted after multiple ‘strange’ incidents since taking over.

Tracy Fell, Steve Jewell and Jamie Jewell have years of experience running pubs across Hampshire and have recently taken over The Golden Lion in Fareham high street. Unfazed by taking over a historical pub, the trio began making simple changes by moving furniture around - but after a few strange occurences, they began questioning whether the pub is already occupied.

They took over the pub on September 24 and Jamie said that from day one, there were unexplainable incidents, particularly involving pint glasses that have suddenly fallen off tables or cabinets.

Tracy said: “Since being here, it’s been strange, very strange, and there’s no one around for it to be put on so yeah, it’s intriguing to say the least.

“On two occasions, two glasses in the exact same place on the exact same table have fallen and it looked like it was pushed off. We then had one at the bar that’s actually come off of the top shelf which is a good four or five inches back and there was no one at the bar, it couldn’t have even been the band’s vibrations - nothing like that.

“It’s not been scary, it’s the intrigue, you just don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

Multiple staff members have also experienced being growled at when heading into the cellar and, on a regular basis, the gas pumps have been turned off without explaination.

Jamie said: “You’re constantly looking around and you think you see something and you don’t - it’s in the corner of your eye and you think what was that?”

Jamie has also experienced a tray of cutlery in the kitchen fall onto the floor while he was in the flat above. He said that he locked up the pub, went upstairs and when he came down the next morning, the cutlery was all over the floor.

The Fareham pub has a long line of landlords and it is frequently part of the historical tour which explores the high street’s curious past. It is also believed that Mr Lawrence, a previous landlord at the 17th century pub, drowned in 1924 at the back of the pub.
