Charity CEO attends city group meeting

AN audience of more than 70 people was graced with a speech from the CEO of Oxfam.

The Portsmouth Oxfam Group held an evening at The Discovery Centre in Portsmouth RC Cathedral, where Mark Goldring, chief executive of Oxfam GB, gave a talk about the charity’s role in ending poverty.

According to the charity, the improvements to the levels of poverty, education and health have been offset by the damage done by climate change and war.

Mr Goldring’s speech was followed by a talk by John Mclafferty, Oxfam’s youth and community advisor – who talked about Oxfam’s role in helping refugees from war-torn countries.

Dr Owen Plunkett, who helped to organise the event, says that there was not only a fantastic turnout, but an interesting discussion about world issues.

He said: ‘We have been fortunate enough to have hosted all the past Oxfam CEOs, the first being
Frank Judd, who had also been the MP for Portsmouth North.’
