Driver killed in Hilsea crash in London Road, Portsmouth with police investigating

POLICE are investigating a fatal collision which saw a van mount the pavement before the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were called to London Road near the Beechwood Road junction, in Hilsea, at 1.27pm yesterday after reports of a crash.

A silver Renault Trafic van had mounted the curb and collided with a set of metal railings.

The road was closed while emergency services worked.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, according to a spokeswoman from Hampshire Constabulary.

She said: ‘His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

‘The road has been fully reopened.

‘We are keen to speak to any motorists who were driving along London Road or the surrounding area around the time of the collision and may have seen anything or has dash cam footage.

‘We’re also keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed or have dash cam footage of a silver Renault Trafic van driving erratically.’
