A DRUNKEN reveller bit and punched a kebab shop worker who offered him free food, a court heard.

Carpet fitter Mason Wilshaw, 21, terrified Pompey Stand Up employee Azad Mihemed as he tried to crawl through the serving hatch opposite Gunwharf Quays in Portsea.

Detailing the February 21 incident, Prosecutor Giles Fletcher said: ‘The complainant works as a chef there.

‘It’s just gone one in the morning. He sees the defendant come into the store. He seems very intoxicated on something.

‘He did record him briefly and he said when he stopped recording he asked if he could help him. The defendant just swore.

‘(The victim) asked if he wanted something for free.’

But ‘deeply ashamed’ Wilshaw swore at the victim and ‘punches him to the left side of his face which caused a cut,’ Mr Fletcher said.

He added: ‘(The victim’s) dropped his phone and because of that it’s cracked the screen.

‘He starts to climb through the hatch. He’s scared.

‘The male then bites down on his hand causing a cut to his right index finger. He’s then kicked the signage in the store.’

Wilshaw, of Washbrook Road, Paulsgrove, admitted assault by beating and criminal damage.

Probation told the court Wilshaw had ‘got carried away’ drinking and ‘consumed too much alcohol’ and ‘became very drunk’.

Sentencing, district judge Gary Lucie ordered Wilshaw to pay £150 compensation and complete 80 hours’ unpaid work in a 12-month community order.

‘All he was trying to do was his job, and he was friendly towards you,’ the judge said. ‘That’s what he gets in response - you damaged his shop as well.’

Wilshaw, who said he has not drunk to excess since the incident, must pay a £90 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Wilshaw has a past caution for battery against a doorman at Pryzm nightclub in Stanhope Road.
