Thieves caught stealing child's bike at Gosport Leisure Centre as police deal with 'increase in thefts'

Multiple reports have been made to police regarding stolen bikes

Arrogant thieves have been caught stealing a child’s bike after it was left outside Gosport Leisure Centre.

The pedal cycle was recovered by police, who are investigating a string of thefts in the area. It was snatched from the leisure centre in Forest Way between 3pm and 6pm on Monday (July 20).

A social media statement from Gosport Police said they’ve “seen an increase in bike thefts at Gosport Leisure Centre”, and are working closely with them to identify those responsible. Police have since identified three suspects.

Officers “acted swiftly”, the force said, after CCTV footage was provided by the leisure centre. “Without this support, this result would not have been achieved,” they added.

Some part so the bike had been replaced, but the original components were found and recovered from a nearby address. The kids bike was returned to its rightful owner.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said the three individuals responsible were issued with community resolutions. A community resolution is an informal, non-statutory police disposal used to handle low-level crimes and anti-social behaviour. Police said it allows the offender to take responsibility - often by apologising, returning property, or repairing damage - without going through the court process.

“Strong words of advice were given, and community resolutions were issued,” they added. “It provides a quick, effective outcome for victims and helps prevent further offending.”

Other similar incidents have been taking place in recent weeks. Officers received a report at 5.29pm on June 8 that on the previous day, June 7, a blue Trek Marlin 007 mountain bike had been taken from outside Gosport Leisure Centre. The lock had been damaged.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing, the police spokesperson said. Officers were called about a separate incident on July 17 at 2.20pm. Sometime between 1.30pm and 1.45pm, a Green Carrera bicycle was taken from outside the leisure centre.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing,” the police spokesperson said. “Patrols will continue in the area to deter offenders and reassure the community.”

Guidance on how to keep bicycles safe and secure can be found on the police website. Anyone with information regarding the two previous thefts can contact police via 101, quoting 44260271253 or 44260342635. Reports can also be submitted online via the police website.
