Man, 22, is in intensive care after stabbing in Paulsgrove

A MAN stabbed in the chest is in intensive care after an attack in Paulsgrove, police have said.

The 22-year-old victim, who was injured in Paulsgrove at around 11pm on Saturday night, is in intensive care at Southampton General Hospital undergoing treatment.

Hampshire police said following medical intervention his injuries are no longer thought to be life-threatening.

Cordons are in place at the skate park in Allaway Avenue, and in a woodland area opposite The Victory Primary School, adjacent to Falmouth Road.

From the woodland area, police have seized a navy-blue coat as evidence for their investigation.

Ambulance crews had called police as they treated the man in Hempsted Road at around 11pm.

Residents in the surrounding area have spoken of their shock about the incident.

A 68-year-old man, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I’ve been here for more than 40 years and nothing like this has ever happened around here.

‘But something was always going to happen at some stage because there isn’t as much of a police presence anymore.

‘There are a lot of people who get into fights around here and so on, but I suppose that’s the same as a lot of places.

‘It worries me because I’ve got a lot of elderly neighbours. To hear about a potential stabbing is never good news.’

A couple living in Falmouth Road say the area does have a bit of a reputation.

The woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘It’s very sad to hear about though.’

A 36-year-old man, also from Falmouth Road, said: ‘Hearing about something like this worries me a lot, it does seem to be becoming more frequent.

‘You don’t expect it to happen that near to you though.’

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘Detectives are investigating a serious assault in Portsmouth.

‘Officers were called to Hempsted Road by an ambulance crew who were dealing with a 22-year-old man who had received a stab wound to his chest.

‘He is currently at Southampton General Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

‘Several cordons have been put up in the area where it's thought to have happened and officers are following up a number of leads.’
