Officers were called to the Jolly Sailor pub on Clarence Parade after being notified of ‘a possible public order incident’ in which a window had been smashed.

A witness who was in the pub at the time and has asked not to be named said: ‘There was a fight involving around 10 men. One man had his hands around another’s throat and another flipped a table and glass went everywhere.

‘Another man picked up a ceramic ash tray and threw it through the window. We all got showered with glass and my wife has now got a cut to her head. I was in shock and really feared for my safety.’
