Mayfield School goes into lockdown as males wearing balaclavas enter the grounds

A Portsmouth school went into temporary lockdown after intruders jumped the fences wearing balaclavas.

Police attended Mayfield School in Mayfield Road on Thursday, October 3, following the reports of four people entering the grounds wearing balaclavas. The school, which educates pupils from infant to senior school, went into lockdown as a response.

Ashley Howard, headteacher at Mayfield School, said: "On Wednesday, October 4, four children, who are not on roll at the school, entered Mayfield School's site without permission. The school followed its safety process by going into temporary lockdown while school staff escorted the intruders off site.

"Police were called and immediately responded. The children responded well and parents were informed."

Upon attending, officers searched the males with no further action required. A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: “We were called at about 2.50pm to a report of four males wearing balaclavas entering the grounds of Mayfield School.

“Officers attended and searched the males and no weapons were located. They were spoken to and their details were taken but no further action was taken.”

In a message to parents, Mr Howard advised that any children affected or worried by the events would be supported.
