Many people have blamed incidents on the road on the conversion from three to four lanes between the two junctions, and the carelessness of drivers.

Brake spokesman Mike Bristow said: ‘It’s disappointing that so many people in Portsmouth have needlessly put lives in danger by taking unnecessary risks through speeding and careless driving.

‘The consequences of reckless driving can be tragic and horrific, with lives ruined forever, just because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.

‘That is why it is important for us all to look out for each other and be considerate.

‘Ultimately, we’re all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads.’
