Why tobacco and vapes have been seized from Portsmouth corner shops by Trading Standards
Several goods were taken from convenience stores by authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.
Vapes, nicotine pouches and tobacco have been confiscated from Portsmouth corner shops after an investigation by Trading Standards.
Handled by Portsmouth City Council, the authority has been carrying out Operation Machinize, which is monitoring the sale of vapes and tobacco in convenience stores across the city. The operation is being carried out in collaboration with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

This work has included seizing an array of goods from several stores in a bid to “prevent underage sales”.
A spokesperson for Portsmouth Trading Standards said: “Portsmouth Trading Standards officers have continued their work as part of Operation Machinize with Portsmouth Police, carrying out further inspections at premises across the city, including Fratton, Copnor, Southsea, the city centre, North End and Cosham.
“The inspections resulted in multiple seizures, while officers also reviewed compliance with vapes, nicotine pouches, other associated tobacco products and measures to prevent underage sales.
“Operation Machinize; the ongoing NCA-coordinated project to tackle money laundering and criminal use of cash-intensive high street businesses. We will continue working with our partners and local businesses to tackle illegal trading and help ensure retailers understand and meet their legal responsibilities.”
