Samba update as new pictures emerge of missing Marwell Zoo capybara as staff work tirelessly to bring her back

Capybara has been missing since escaping in March

There is fresh hope that a missing capybara will be returned to Marwell Zoo after escaping six months ago with zoo staff now knowing the area she is in.

Samba escaped from a temporary enclosure in March sparking national interest as she managed to evade searches in the Hampshire country side. After a confirmed sighting in August, the zoo’s team in charge of finding her have narrowed down the search area and set up wildlife cameras which have captured pictures of her this month.

While the team is “working tirelessly” to find her, Marwell are keeping her location under wraps and have issued a statement explaining that it is not a simple process to collect her.

The statement reads: “Recovering Samba is a gradual and carefully managed process. Although we know the area she is in, it isn’t simply a case of being able to approach and collect her. It’s vital that we keep any stress to an absolute minimum, as frightening or disturbing her could cause her to move away from the area and make her safe recovery more difficult.

“Over recent weeks, we have installed additional wildlife cameras, which have provided further photographic evidence of Samba. We have also been establishing a feeding area, encouraging her to become familiar with the location and return regularly.

“This is an important step in our plans to safely recover her. As Samba is currently on private land, and to avoid disturbing her or disrupting our ongoing efforts, we are keeping details of her exact location confidential.”
