‘They extended the police cordon for safety and it was quite tense but the police handled it quite well.’

The house in which the stand-off happened is owned by Fareham Borough Council, and the authority’s leader Sean Woodward said: ‘I am pleased to hear that the incident has been satisfactorily resolved by the police without injury to local residents although I am sure it must have been of real concern to have armed police in their street.

‘If there has been damage to a council property then the council’s operatives will urgently make it good.

‘If it is serious enough to render the property uninhabitable or if the police need to take possession of the property to undertake further investigations than we will rehouse our tenants temporarily.’
