An anti-racism unity rally in Portsmouth has seen groups from two different ideologies confront one another in angry scenes.

A Unity Rally in Portsmouth’s Guildhall Square has seen anti-fascism protestors facing off with anti-immigration protestors today (September 7).

The protest has been peaceful with around 350 anti-racism protestors gathering on the Guildhall steps to hear speeches from community leaders and Jon Woods, Chair of Portsmouth Trade Union Council.

However, a group of around 15 Antifa members dressed all in black and wearing scarves over their faces have been in heated conversation with anti-immigration protestors, who have set themselves up on the civic offices side of the square.

Police have confirmed that there have been no issues so far at the protest with no arrests made at this time.

The rally was organised by Stand Up To Racism with a spokesperson saying before the event: “The rioting may have calmed down, the prisons may now be full of arsonists but the movement that spawned the horror on our streets has not gone away. In recent weeks Stand up to Racism locally and nationally has been out opposing the far right. We will be doing the same this Saturday. “We will be countering the politics of hate with voices of unity and diversity. It is important the people stand up and say that the far right do not speak for Britain. Britain is a diverse multicultural country with people who worship many religions and none.

“Our event will not be a divisive event, it will be an event that celebrates diversity and stands with all our communities.”

Anti-immigration protestors held up banners and flags with messages such as ‘stop illegal immigration’ and ‘British homes for British people’ as they criticised the impact that immigration has on services in the UK.
