The Queens Hotel will be marking the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings with a stylish, patriotic salute to veterans throughout this week.

The historic building in Osborne Road, Southsea, will be used as the backdrop for a D-Day light display which will switch on at 9.30pm each night until Saturday.

During the Second World War, General Charles de Gaulle stayed at the Queens Hotel for a long period and he could often be found on the terrace staring longingly towards France.

The light show includes flags from nations involved in the Normandy invasion being projected onto the hotel’s exterior.

Owner Farid Yeganeh said: 'Portsmouth has been proud to be the focus of the world’s attention as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

'With the Queens Hotel occupying such a prominent location adjacent to where all the celebratory activities will be happening, we wanted to play our part and light up the heart of Southsea.'
