'Please avoid the area': Major emergency response as crews tackle large field fire in Havant

More than 40 firefighters have tackled a large field fire, with residents urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said crews were alerted to a blaze in Southleigh Road, Havant, shortly after 2pm, with initial reports indicating the fire involved hay bales.

Crews from Havant, Cosham, Southsea and Waterlooville attended the scene and were supported by specialist vehicles from Fareham, Portchester, Bordon and SHQ.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We have a large number of fire engines in attendance, so please avoid the area.

“Due to the smoke in the area, local residents are advised to close windows and doors.”

Using jets, hose reels and beaters, firefighters were able to surround and stop the fire which affected an area approximately 300m by 200m in size.

The fire is now out, but crews remain on the scene dampening down.
