FIREFIGHTERS used their latest piece of equipment to put out a van that had caught fire.

The Ford Transit van was well alight by the time firefighters from Cosham arrived in Tower Road, Southsea, at 1am this morning, after a passerby called it in.

Items inside the van, including a washing machine, were ablaze. They used a high-pressure lance to pierce the side of the blue van and inject a mist of water to bring the temperature down and control the fire.

Radiated heat from the fire also damaged a nearby scooter. It is not known how the fire started.

Elsewhere, fire crews from Fareham put out burning bushes in Cunningham Drive – once at 6.30pm last night and then again at 5.30am this morning.
