Firefighters rescue people from lift and put out bin fire

FIREFIGHTERS rescued four people when the lift they were in broke down.

Two fire crews from Southsea were called to Yew Tree Court, a sheltered housing block, in Haslemere Road, Southsea, yesterday at 9.20am.

Three men and a woman – all staff and contractors – were trapped for 10 minutes on the third floor of the three-storey block before firefighters freed them.

Elsewhere, two fire crews from Havant were called to extinguish a burning bin at a block of flats in Mumby Road, Gosport.

The fire took hold in a metal bin in a communal bin shed at about 10.30am yesterday. The fire was put out quickly. The cause is unknown.
