Holocaust survivorto attend memorial

A HOLOCAUST survivor will talk about his experiences when he is the guest of honour at a ceremony marking the liberation of a concentration camp.

Each year, Havant Borough Council marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, at the Holocaust Memorial in Havant Cemetery, Eastern Road.

This year 92-year-old Jewish survivor Walter Kammerling has been invited to attend the ceremony. The service, led by Councillor Gerald Shimbart, will focus Holocaust Memorial Day’s theme Don’t Stand By and include a speech by Mr Kammerling who was 14 when Nazi Germany occupied Austria in 1938.

The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner, said: ‘The ceremony will reflect upon the impact of man’s inhumanity to many through persecution, conflict and genocide, whilst remembering those who suffered and died in the Holocaust.

‘This is a very important date in our calendar and we are honoured to have Holocaust survivor Walter Kammerling attending the ceremony this year, together with many other mayors and chairmen from across Hampshire to commemorate this years theme of Don’t stand by.’

The service will take place on January 27 at 11am.
