We look at some of eleven iconic and long-standing buildings and landmarks from today – and a few from yesteryear too!
5. Royal Marines Museum
The closure of the Royal Marines Museum's former home in Eastney was announced in 2016 due to concerns over its poor condition and the risk of exhibits being damaged by unsatisfying storage facilities within the building. This stunning building along the seafront is set to be converted into a hotel, while plans are still afoot for a museum 'experience' at the historic dockyard. Photo: -
6. Debenhams, Southsea
Debenhams in Southsea closed in January 2020 and has remained empty ever since. Planning permission to redevelop the site was granted by the council in January 2021 and fully agreed in November of the same year. A business case has since also been approved for the relocation of Trafalgar Medical Group Practice to the new ground floor health centre. Portsmouth City Council has said it will move ahead with a compulsory purchase bid if the landowner continues to do nothing with the site. Photo: Picture Ian Hargreaves
7. Kingston Prison
The transformation of Kingston Prison into new homes is in its final stages with work ongoing to create 183 new affordable homes on the Milton site. It is part of the scheme to regenerate Portsmouth’s former HM Prison Kingston into 267 homes, with the Victorian gaol being given a new lease of life after the prison closed in 2013. Photo: -
8. Knight and Lee
Knight and Lee Building in Southsea closed in 2019, but plans have been approved to convert it into a hotel with a gym, two cinemas, two shops, a hotel reception/bar area and an indoor food market, akin to those found in London. Photo: Habibur Rahman
