We look at some of eleven iconic and long-standing buildings and landmarks from today – and a few from yesteryear too!
9. St James' Hospital
A planning application to build 200 homes on the hospital site was submitted in early 2020 and the developer had originally hoped a decision on the £55m scheme would be reached the following year. But the application has been met with significant opposition from campaigners who have warned it would have a ‘significant’ impact on the area with the planning committee refusing it over the proposed felling of trees and impact on the historic setting of the hospital. A planning appeal will now decide the fete of the plans. This CGI shows how the St James' Hospital site would look under plans by developer PJ Livesey. Photo: PJ Livesey
10. The News Centre
The News Centre in Hilsea sits in a prime site in the entrance to the city and has been sold to First Bus for a new ‘super bus depot’ designed to accommodate an all-electric fleet of up to 90 vehicles. It has been empty since previous owner DMG Media shut down its operations in July last year, ending five decades of newspaper printing from the site. Photo: Chris Moorhouse
11. Vulcan Building
The historic building has been given a whole new lease of life with its prominence - and new bell tower - a real feature at the Gunwhalf Quays development. It houses new apartments, the Aspex Gallery and Loch Fyne Restaurant and Bar. Photo: Michael Scaddan
12. Burton/Topman
The prime site in Commercial Road still remains empty after the company went into administration. Shoppers are keen for a new retailer to take on the site and give the area a boost. Photo: Google Maps
