John, 60, from Denmead, said he has always enjoyed building work and started his own business in lockdown.

Having done the job part-time while working for a warehousing company in London, he plans to go full time in January.

John said doing any job properly is important to him as he wants to build his business on trust, honesty and good recommendations.

He said: ‘In my industry I’ve learnt that the first job is the easy one, the second one is the hard one because if you don’t do the first job right you won’t get the second one.

‘I’m very focused on making sure that every job is done right.

‘I want to keep everyone happy – someone not being happy would be the worst thing ever.

‘I will turn things away if they’re not right for me.

‘If it’s a job I can’t do I’ll say I can’t do it, I’ll be straight up with people because I want to be trusted.’

As well as bigger jobs such as building sheds, fences or patios, John also helps people who need smaller jobs done, including putting up curtain rails or fixing taps.

He said he won’t turn down anything he can do.

‘I don’t mind doing the small jobs,’ he said.

‘I’m planning to put aside a day each week especially for the small jobs so that I can get around to everybody who needs it.

‘Where I want to keep busy but also want to help everyone I can, I still want to make time for the smaller jobs to help people that might be living on their own and need that extra help.

‘I can get most jobs done and hopefully at a reasonable price as well, I'm not in it to rip people off.’

John said that genuinely enjoying the work as well as being a perfectionist ensures that he completes all jobs to the best of his ability.

He said he is always courteous in people’s living space, and tidies up any mess he makes before he leaves.
