Great South Run: Pompey-themed 'blue wave' of runners to raise money for charity in 10-mile race

“It’s always a proud moment when Pompey comes together like this.”

Hundreds of runners will take part in a special “Pompey Blue Wave” at this year’s Great South Run, it has been revealed.

Pompey in the Community, the charity arm of Portsmouth FC, has secured around 500 places in the 10-mile race, creating a dedicated wave of runners supporting the charity when the event returns to Portsmouth on Sunday, October 18.

The initiative marks the first time the charity has organised a large-scale group entry for the event, which attracts more than 20,000 runners and thousands of spectators to the city each year.

Pompey in the Community works across the city promoting education, healthy living, sports participation and wellbeing, particularly among vulnerable and disadvantaged residents.

Chief executive Clare Martin MBE said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing the first ever ‘blue wave’ at this year’s Great South Run. It’s always a proud moment for Pompey in the Community when Pompey comes together like this, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone taking part and representing us on the day.”

Runners taking part in the Blue Wave will follow the traditional Great South Run route along the South Coast, passing landmarks including Southsea Castle and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, while enjoying views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight.

The Great South Run has been a fixture in Portsmouth since its launch in 1990, raising millions of pounds for charities over the years.

Fundraising and events manager Lee Amey said: “The Great South Run is always a highlight in our calendar, and we can’t wait to see our supporters out in force as part of the first ever ‘blue wave’. Every runner helps raise awareness and vital funds, and we’re excited for what promises to be another fantastic day for the community and the charity.”

Among those preparing for the race is Russel, who is supported by Pompey in the Community and lives with learning difficulties and Tourette’s.

He first completed the Great South Run alongside his mother and aunt in 2018, raising money for the charity that has supported him throughout his life.

Since then, he has returned for the event in 2019, 2023 and 2025, taking part with members of the charity’s adult disability group. Russel regularly attends the group’s sessions and visits the charity’s offices every Friday.
