Keen growers from Purbrook Horticultural Society worked hard on their gardens this year, and adapted to show off their wares in new ways through an online show encompassing all the usual show classes like fruits and vegetables, flowers and home baking.

Although they were unable to hold their usual event and prizegiving at Crookhorn College, the group threw themselves into the online challenge.

Chairman Lynda Piddington said: ‘As gardeners we are used to the vagaries of British weather and adapting to the situation and carrying on. Our members certainly did adapt and embraced technology.

‘Who knew we could produce great photographs on phones and cameras, upload them and attach to emails where they could be collated? We set members the challenge of producing a virtual Show as we did for the spring but on a bigger scale.

‘As the exhibits were for fun, they were not judged and no awards given and with the opportunity to be anonymous, entries came from many new to entering thus giving them the confidence to perhaps do so in real times.’

The society is now in preparation for its spring 2021 show which will take place in March, hopefully in person, and the group is potting up bulbs in readiness.
