Police officer involved in crash near Portsmouth Naval Base was responding to an emergency call, police confirm

A POLICE officer involved in a three-car pile-up outside Portsmouth Naval Base earlier today was driving to an emergency incident when the crash occurred.

Three vehicles – a police response car, a Mercedes, and a BMW – were involved in a collision at the Mile End Road junction with the M275 at 10.19am this morning.

Police have now confirmed that the police vehicle was responding to an emergency call when the crash took place.

The response car smashed into the metal barrier surrounding the traffic lights near the naval base, causing extensive damage to the front of the vehicle.

A black BMW, which appeared to have been rear-ended, also smashed through the metal railings.

Paramedics attended the scene, with a female police officer – who was driving at the time of the collision – taken to hospital, according to a spokesman from Hampshire Constabulary.

He said: ‘The female officer who was driving the police vehicle has been taken to hospital as a precaution and another driver is suspected to have whiplash injuries.’

Royal Navy police from the naval base supported by diverting traffic from the M275.

The road has since reopened.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them by calling 101 and quoting reference 44210005564.
