Regularly packed-out events for the over-30s took place at the venue next to Hilsea Lido throughout the ’90s and organiser Denis Kaye returned on Wednesday with Club-50, a new regular monthly disco night.

While some other events had been pulling in crowds since the venue reopened, the over-30s disco, previously known as ‘singles night’, was notably absent from the new line-up until it was recently reintroduced for over-50s.

Despite inclement weather threatening to dampen enthusiasm, the first of the regular events drew a large attendance.

Denis played his usual cross section of dance hits spanning multiple decades and was rewarded with a packed dance floor and a party atmosphere.

One reveller, Rosemary Young from Crookhorn said: ‘I used to come to the over-30s and it’s lovely to see the venue so full and everyone back and having such a great time.’

Another long-term fan, Eileen Johnson of Cosham took a breather from dancing to share her memories of the much-loved event.

She said: ‘I first met Denis when he ran events at the Curzon Rooms in Waterlooville and I was at the first over-30s when he moved here to Hilsea in 1988. I think I may still have my ticket!’

With the mirror ball giving the lighting a nostalgic feel and the dance floor fully occupied, there was much reminiscing from those that grew up with the Blue Lagoon at the centre of their social lives.

John Buckner from Wymering said: ‘As a youngster I used to ride my bike around here, as an adult I came to the discos and I’ve been back for family celebrations too. This was always the venue back in the day and we’re like kids in a sweet shop to be back.’

The next Club-50 event at The Blue Lagoon will take place on Wednesday, April 8, costing £4 for members and £5 for those planning to join.
