Alan had been due to be part of the Portsmouth Legends evening at The Kings Theatre on November 12. Following his passing, the event will now take on a new significance with it becoming a tribute to Alan and an opportunity for fellow players, fans and the wider Pompey family to remember a remarkable man and goalkeeper.

Joining the evening are Paul Merson, David James, Mark Hateley and Micky Quinn, who will share their own memories of their football careers, their experiences of playing at Fratton Park and, importantly, their memories and stories of Alan.

From unforgettable moments on the pitch to the characters, friendships and rivalries that made up life around the dressing room, the evening will celebrate the stories behind the football, with plenty of humour, affection and the occasional bit of mischief along the way.

There will also be a live audience Q&A, giving supporters the chance to put their questions to the legends on stage and hear some of their own memories of Alan and their time in the game.

For Portsmouth, Alan’s name is woven into the fabric of the football club with his remarkable career seeing him make 801 appearances for Pompey, a club record that “reflects not only his ability but an extraordinary commitment to the team and the city he represented”, a Portsmouth Theatres spokesperson said. “With his extraordinary longevity, loyalty and connection to the city, Alan became far more than a footballer, he was a true local legend.”

A spokesperson for the show’s producers said: “We were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Alan’s passing. He was a true Pompey legend and his loss will be felt enormously by everyone connected with the club.

“What was originally planned as an evening of football stories will now be a very special celebration of Alan’s life, his career and the memories he created for so many people.

“Paul, David, Mark and Micky will share their own memories of Alan, alongside the stories, laughter and camaraderie that make football so special. We hope the evening gives Pompey fans the opportunity to come together and remember a truly remarkable man.

“The Kings Theatre Portsmouth is proud to host what will now be a very special tribute to Alan Knight. A night of stories, laughter, memories and, above all, a celebration of a true Pompey legend.”
