Thousands watch HMS Sultan fireworks

About 10,000 revellers flocked to HMS Sultan to watch the base’s annual bonfire and firework bonanza, which lit up the sky of Gosport.

Rousing tunes accompanied last night’s impressive 20-minute display – touted as one of the biggest on the south coast.

And there was even a battle between two blazing ships which showered each other with dazzling fireworks while crowds roared with delight.

Emma Johnson and her daughters Emily, 10, and Lois, six, have been desperate to see the display for years.

Emma, 39, of Stamshaw, said: ‘It was my first time going to HMS Sultan and the fireworks were incredible.

‘They just kept on going. I never thought they were going to end.’

Karen Powell, 40, was with her husband Sean, 48, and their children Ethan, seven, and Lily, three, of Gosport.

She said: ‘The display was absolutely brilliant and the kids really enjoyed it.’

As well as the fireworks and bonfire there was a host of carnival attractions from fire breathers to funfair rides.

Revellers from across the globe joined the spectacle, with guests from as far as New Zealand, Australia and Siberia.

Gregg Moore, 39, of Gosport, said it was the perfect family evening.

He watched the action with wife Karen, 29, Jenson, eight and Elouise, four, and praised the navy’s efforts.

‘It’s a brilliant local event that brings the whole community together,’ he said.

Dad-of-two Aaron Matthews, 31, of Fareham, added: ‘It’s an amazing night, the navy have done really well.’

Captain Peter Towell, HMS Sultan’s commanding officer, was delighted by the turnout and praised his personnel for all their hard work.

He added: ‘We were so pleased to welcome so many people to our bonfire and fireworks night.

‘The main aim of the evening is to provide the people of Gosport and the local community with an affordable night of quality entertainment.’
