Recycling bins will not be collected next week in parts Havant borough as it deals with huge backlog of missed collections

Recycling bins will not be collected next week in parts of the borough

Recycling bin collections are being suspended across parts of Havant borough in a bid to catch up with delays and a backlog of bin collections.

Havant Borough Council is suspending kerbside recycling collections in Bedhampton, Brockhampton, Broadmarsh, Denvilles, Emsworth, Havant, Hayling Island, Langstone, Leigh Park, West Leigh, Warren Park and Warblington areas for one week from Monday, June 8.

It said this was to allow crews to focus on clearing the current backlog of domestic waste collections and return the service to schedule as quickly as possible.

It follows constant problems which have plagued much of the borough for the whole of May with delays to collections as a result of what the council has described as 'unexpected circumstances'.

As previously reported by The News, many bins have been outside homes and on pavements for days, with many residents frustrated that they have no idea if their bin will be collected or not and very little communication from the council.

One local resident said: “Bins haven’t been collected in over a week with Havant Borough Council they saying they are one day behind! This is not the case and our black bin is also overdue. Also, they’re saying recycling isn’t a priority though this is overflowing!”

The News has previously contacted Havant Borough Council to ask for an explanation about why the delays are happening but it has declined to give specifics.

In a statement councillor Netty Shepherd, cabinet lead for public realm, said: “We’re working hard to restore a normal service for waste collections as soon as possible - a one-week suspension of recycling collections will enable us to that.

“We recognise this is inconvenient and apologise for that - it’s not at all ideal, however we’d only take this measure if it was necessary. We do thank people for showing patience whilst crews work through the backlog and return people’s waste collection service to schedule.”

The next recycling collection will take place week commencing Monday 22 June, on the normal scheduled collection day.

The council asks people living in the affected areas to:

  • Squash, flatten, and condense recyclable materials within your bins where possible
  • Present any additional recyclable side waste in either a cardboard box or a clear sack on your next scheduled collection day from week commencing 22 June
