Southsea's former Debenhams store to be transformed into new monthly market

A FORMER city centre department store is set to be transformed into a bustling monthly pop-up market showcasing the creative talent of Portsmouth.

The ‘We Create Market’ will be opening up shop at the former Debenhams site in Southsea next month, it has been revealed this morning.

The market will launch in the Palmerston Road-based building, now known as Handleys Corner, on the weekend of Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13.

It will continue on the second weekend of every month up until December.

Announcing the news today, a spokeswoman from Portsmouth Creates – which is behind the project – said: ‘Brimming with local talent you can expect a safe, buzzing atmosphere and an abundance of local makers, artists, crafts, creators, designers, entrepreneurs, and all-round local goodies on offer in a weatherproof, indoor venue.’

Organisers have insisted the new city centre facility will ‘meet government guidance’ on coronavirus safety, featuring ‘spacious walkways’, a one-way system and hand sanitiser stations. Shoppers will also be urged to wear masks.

The new market is expected to fill the void left by the Square Tower’s Crafts in the Tower event, which has been left unable to operate due to the coronvirus pandemic.

The new crafts market has been backed by Portsmouth’s culture boss, Councillor Steve Pitt, who helped broker an agreement with the National Regional Property Group, which manages the old Debenhams store.

Among those supporting the new venture include the team from Victorious Festival, Crafts in the Tower, the Hotwalls Studios, Markers Guild, Apex Gallery and the University of Portsmouth, which will showcase the work of students and graduates.

Portsmouth Creates is calling those eager to show off their items to come forward.

The city arts organisation will be subsidising the price of all pitches and window displays, with stall prices starting from £40.
